Changes after SONAR Playtest

What’s New in S.O.N.A.R. After Playtest

If there’s one thing we learned from the latest round of playtesting, it’s that sub captains love pushing machinery far beyond its intended limits. You pushed our systems to the brink, broke a few things, and gave us the exact feedback we needed to refine the experience.

Based on how you played, sneaked, and occasionally sank, we’ve rolled out a massive wave of improvements, reworked mechanics, and fresh content for S.O.N.A.R. Submarine Operators Not Actually Ready. Here is a look at what’s changing before your next voyage.

Changes after SONAR Playtest

1. Tactical Stealth & Engine Overhauls

Silence is officially a weapon. Stealth and engine mechanics have been reworked to give crews deeper control over their acoustic footprint.

  • Snorkel Station & CO₂ Management: You can now use a Snorkel station while surfaced to pull fresh air into an onboard tank for later submerged use. Chemical CO₂ filters are still available underwater as a backup once that tank runs out, keeping you hidden when surfacing isn’t an option.
  • Toggleable Active Sonar: Active sonar can now be completely powered down. Going dark leaves you navigating blind, but it also strips enemy vessels of their easiest way to track you.
  • RPM Based Engine Noise: Sound output is now tied directly to actual engine RPMs rather than just throttle position. Faster movement generates higher noise.
  • Engine Power Modes: We’ve introduced distinct engine states: Silent Running, Cruise Speed, and Force Engine. Pushing the engine to its limit is risky, but it might just set a speed record if your hull holds together.
  • Periscope Zoom: The periscope station now features variable zoom for better long range reconnaissance.

2. Refined Combat & Clearer Systems

Making tactical decisions under pressure requires fast access to the right data. We’ve streamlined critical stations so you can focus on surviving.

  • Torpedo Specifications: Torpedo range data has been added directly to the manual, making it easier to select the right ordinance for target distance.
  • Upgraded Diagnostics: Visual displays for Stealth, Air, and Engine systems have been redesigned to present real-time telemetry more clearly.
  • Enhanced Audio & Comms: Voice chat now supports push-to-talk. Additionally, master sound effects and voice communications feature independent volume sliders.

3. Fair Competition & Content Expansion

Leaderboards are getting a major structural update to ensure every run is fair, readable, and competitive.

  • Fair Leaderboards & Encryption: Mission files and gameplay metadata are now encrypted to protect leaderboard integrity and lay the foundation for future PvP modes. Furthermore, leaderboards are now filtered by crew size (1, 2, 3, or 4 players), meaning solo runners no longer compete directly against full crews.
  • New “Very Hard” Mission: A fourth high difficulty mission has been added. Built specifically to test your crew’s mastery of the new stealth, engine, and air mechanics, it leaves very little room for error.

4. Performance & Quality-of-Life Updates

Behind the scenes, we’ve overhauled core optimization to keep load times short and matches smooth.

  • Smaller File Size: Better asset compression has dramatically reduced the game’s overall footprint, leading to faster downloads and quicker load times.
  • Network Optimization: Packet architecture has been streamlined to minimize latency during co-op sessions.
  • Main Menu Manual: The operational manual is now accessible directly from the main menu, allowing crews to study system controls before dropping into a lobby.
  • Visual Polish: End-of-mission screens feature improved lighting for a better post-run debrief.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the playtest! Keep your eyes on our official channels for the next dive window and wishlist SONAR on Steam.
